Bog walking
Bogs are one of the oldest landscapes in Estonia. Their development started after the ice-age ended 11000 years ago.

During the Soviet times bog areas were actively drained and turned to agricultural sites. Today 20% of land is covered by bogs in Estonia. Did you know that because of its slightly acid environment bacteria can not survive in bogs. The water network consists of hundreds of hollows, bog pools and funnels, as well as of overgrown outlet brooks and streams. Bogpools are known for their disinfecting and healing ability.

Snowshoeing in autumn is all about enjoying the nature and observing wildlife. There is no snow in Estonia in November and we use snowshoes to walk on wetlands. Snowshoes are used to move in bogs throughout the times. For Estonia it is no new discovery.

Bog walk starts with regular hike on the woods. When approaching higher bog areas we clip on snowshoes we took with us. Using snowshoes we can safely and easily visit damper and softer parts of the bogs.

Bog walk can last anywhere from 2 hour short hike to 2 days tour. Length of the tour is easily adjustable according to the expectations of the group.

Time

Bog walks are available throughout the year. Different seasons offer different emotions.

  • Autumn (September- November) – best time to visit wetlands and woods. Beautiful nature and no insects. You might find berries. Daylight lasts till 8-9pm.

  • Winter – (December-Feb ) - quite interesting depending on the winter. Even if there is not too much snow, bog makes you feel like walking in really deep snow.

  • Spring – (March-May) – nature is waking up. The main thing to observe are arriving birds (April-May).

  • Summer (June-August) – hot, lot of insects, but small lakes are warm and inviting (and healing).
